Healthy Living

We use organic farming techniques whenever and wherever possible so that customers of our organic produce can enjoy not just fine but also healthier food. Durians are said to cause “heatiness” and constipation. It is commonly believed that the chemical pesticide residues left on the fruit are a factor. None of the customers of our organic durians have experienced this “heatiness” or constipation though they have faced this with other durians before. Don’t just take it from us, try it yourself!

Organic Farming

A lot of time and effort are expended to improve our practices and to acquire new technological know-how for organic farming. This is our noble attempt to reduce not only damage to our produce but also to minimize harm to Mother Nature. Instead of using easier and cheaper methods like synthetic chemicals, we opt for natural traps and organic wood vinegar, probiotics etc for pest control, soil enrichment and even to improve the health of our livestock. Look out for our bright yellow insect traps!

Premium Durians

Our durians are all from prime old durian trees of more than 35 years old. We grow D24, D101, D13, Red Prawn and many other clones. At 35 years, our durian trees are in their prime fruit-bearing age. The pulp of their fruits is full-bodied with a rich aroma and intense flavour, ranging from firm to creamy, sweet to bitter and even bittersweet at the same time. Be a connoisseur, try all the different varieties!

Some Interesting Facts about Durians

Durian Tree

Durian trees used to take 7-8 years before they start fruiting but nowadays 4-5 years suffices, due to better technological know-how and improved clones.
Generally, durians trees of less than 10 years old are considered “young” trees.
10-20 year-old durian trees are regarded as mature for fruit-bearing purposes.
20-40 year-old trees are classified as prime old trees that bear fruits of superior quality if they are properly cared and nourished for.

Our trees are 35 years old so are considered prime old trees. Some are 60-70 ft tall. Despite their towering height, they are quite “fussy” – too little water and they will not grow well; too much, they can develop diseases.

How long can durian trees live?
They are jungle trees and can live 400 – 500 years or more.

Durian Flower

Durian flowers are not only colourful, pretty but also edible. They can be eaten raw or as tempura! They also have sweet nectar that can be drunk like honey!

Most of the flowers are yellow and the durian pulp follows the colour of the flowers. There are red durian flowers producing red durian pulp!

Generally, durian trees need to be stressed like undergoing a dry period of 2-4 weeks before durian buds appear. Hence durians are considered ‘seasonal’.

Durian Fruit

How many fruits can a durian tree bear each season?

Some very mature trees can bear more than 3000 fruits. But they do not bear fruits every season, especially if proper care and sufficient nutrition are not given. It is also generally not advisable to have a durian tree (except the very strong and healthy ones) bear too many fruits each time (way in excess of 500 fruits) as it may be too taxing for the tree and cause their premature death.

Durian Pulp

Durian is naturally rich in iron, Vitamin C and potassium which can improve muscle strength, skin health and even lower blood pressure. It also contains high dietary fibre which can help with constipation.

What gives durian its pungent smell?
“A key component of the smell are volatile sulphur compounds or VSCs. This VSC production is “turbocharged” in durian fruits” said geneticist Teh Bin Tean, co-leader of the study published in the journal Nature Genetics.
